Hoyt Wilhelm

James Hoyt Wilhelm ( born July 26, 1922 in Huntersville, North Carolina; † August 23, 2002 in Sarasota, Florida) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball.

Biography

Hoyt Wilhelm began his career in the National League on April 19, 1952 at the age of 29 years at the New York Giants. His first victory as Einwechselwerfer he received on 23 April 1952 on a 9:5 victory against the Boston Braves. In his first punch appearance in Major League Wilhelm scored a home run against Dick Hoover of the Braves. Should run this home the only stay in his twenty year career.

Wilhelm was considered one of the most successful Einwechselwerfer of all time. When the Cleveland Indians and the Baltimore Orioles, he was also used as a starting pitcher. Overall Wilhelm disputed 1070 games as a pitcher, a record that would be broken by Dennis Eckersley until 26 September 1998. Wilhelm was the first player to reach 200 saves in the Major Leagues. With his 124 victories as Einwechselwerfer he leads today to the leaderboard. His career ended Wilhelm on July 10, 1972 at the age of 49 years.

1985 Hoyt Wilhelm was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2002, he died at the age of 80 years in Sarasota, Florida.
