Huajuapan de León (short: Huajuapan, officially: Heroica Ciudad de Huajuapan de León ) is a municipality and a city in the northwest of the state of Oaxaca in Mexico.

Name

The name Huajuapan or Huaxuapan is composed of the following Nahuatl words: huaxin = Weißkopfmimose, Ohtli = way apan = river. He therefore means river of bald mimosa or place of Bald mimosas on the river.

The nickname refers to de León Antonio de León, one originating from the place heroes of the Mexican War of Independence.

To commemorate the siege Huajuapans in 1812 bears the place since 1843 the honorary title of Heroica Villa ( Heldenort ). With a duration of 111 days, this was the longest siege of a place in the struggle of the Spanish army against the Mexican insurgents, also it was obtained by the Mexicans under José María Morelos. Since 1884, when the city was Huajuapan, the honorary title of Heroica is ciudad ( city of heroes ).

Geography

The town has 45,321 inhabitants Huajuapan. It is the seat of the municipios Huajuapan, which is 361.06 km ² and has a population of 57 808. Huajuapan is located in the La Mixteca Oaxaqueña, a very rough and mountainous region of Oaxaca.

Climate

The climate is mostly dry Huajuapan.
