Huaytunas Lake

Largest lake in the Bolivian lowlands

The Huaytunas Lake (Lago Huaytunas ) is a freshwater lake in the Pampa region of the South American Andean Republic of Bolivia. Alternative name for the lake is " Lake Rogoaguado ", " Lake Geneva " (Lake Geneva ) and " Lake Yajchaja ".

Location

The lake is located in the center of the district municipality in the province Exaltación Yacuma in the department of Beni. The Huaytunas lake lies at an altitude of 146 m, 40 km north- west of Exaltación, the central location of the municipality of the Río Mamoré, which is connected via the Ruta 902 with the trunk road network in Bolivia. Nearest village is San José, ten kilometers southwest of the southern shore of Lake Huaytunas located.

Size

The lake stretches from north to south over a length of 35 km and has a width of up to 16 km. Its shoreline is 165 km, and the water surface area is 329.5 km ², which makes the lake the largest freshwater lake in the Bolivian lowlands. On the eastern shore of the lake directly in front of the shore are two small islands.
