Hubert Selby, Jr.

Hubert Selby Jr. ( born July 23, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, † April 26, 2004 in Los Angeles ) was an American writer. He became famous especially for his novel Last Exit to Brooklyn. Selby also worked as a screenwriter and in smaller roles as a film actor.

Life

Selby left with 15 years of school to hire at the U.S. Merchant Marine. There, he became infected with tuberculosis. He was discharged at the age of 18 years to go home because he was sick unto death. A lung therefore had to be surgically removed him. Selby spent the next ten years with various lung problems, bedridden. Physically unable to earn in this state a livelihood as an employee, he decided: I can the alphabet, maybe I could be a writer. He began to write short stories.

The great success - and scandal - his novel Last Exit to Brooklyn he does not coped. In Britain, he was then banned for obscenity. The best-seller made ​​him rich temporarily. Selby was alcohol-and drug -dependent, which took him to jail later. After his release, he was actually looking for free and turned to a new life in Los Angeles.
