Huetar language

Huetar is an extinct indigenous language of Central America, which belonged to the family of Chibchan languages. It was spoken in what is now Costa Rica and Panama and was before the Spanish conquest, the lingua franca of the Central Valley (Valle Central) of Costa Rica. During the 17th century, the Huetar died out, as the surviving indigenous population of the Central Valley took over the Spanish as their language. The Huetar was closely related to the maleku and by some linguists considered the same as a dialect.
