Huey Long (singer)

Huey Long ( born April 25, 1904 in Sealy, Texas, † June 10, 2009 in Houston ) was an American jazz musician ( guitarist, vocalist, arranger ).

After various jobs in the area around Houston, he began his musical career in 1925 with the Frank Davis Louisiana Jazz Band, in which he played banjo. He recorded with Lil Hardin Armstrong and with Buster Bailey and played in Jesse Stone's Chicago Orchestra. With the assistance of Fletcher Henderson Long arranged for Benny Goodman and played with him, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton and Fats Navarro. Then the guitarist played with Art Tatum and Slam Stewart Trio and worked with Sarah Vaughn, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie in the band of Earl Hines. In 1945, he was briefly a member of the vocal group The Ink Spots. He later led his own trio with Eddie Lockjaw Davis took on and also worked with Nat King Cole, Lena Horne and BB King. In the 1950s, he was to care for the U.S. Army on tour before he worked as a guitar teacher in New York City. In the 1990s, he returned to Texas.
