Hugh Dykes, Baron Dykes

Hugh John Maxwell Dykes, Baron Dykes ( born May 17, 1939) is a British politician. He is the foreign policy spokesman for the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords.

Dykes studied at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. He married in 1966 Susan Margaret Smith, with whom he has three sons. In 2000, the marriage ended in divorce.

Life and career

Dykes drew in 1970 for the Conservative Party in the House of Commons, and was until 1997 in the Parliament. From 1974 to 1977 he was also in the European Parliament. During his time in Parliament he was defense minister in Edward Heath's cabinet, and belonged to the Cabinet Office to.

After his internal party defeat against Kenneth Clarke in 1997, Dyke the Liberal Democrats joined. Just one year after his party admission, he was adviser to Paddy Ashdown for European political affairs.

Besides his work as a spokesman for foreign policy, he was Vice President of the British - German Association.

Because of its intense commitment to Europe Dykes was honored several times. In 1991, the Federal Cross of Merit he was awarded, and in 2004 he received the French Legion of Honour. In 2004, he was raised as Baron Dykes for Life Peer.
