Hugh Grenier

Hugo Garnier (* 1130, † after 1167 ) was lord of Caesarea in the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem.

His parents were Walter I. Garnier and Juliane. He followed his father in 1154 as Lord of Caesarea.

Life

1167 Hugo took under King Amalric I of Jerusalem, whose expedition to Egypt in part. After the Crusaders had advanced as far as the Nile, concluded the Fatimid vizier Shawar into an agreement with the Crusaders, with the aim to destroy the Syrian army under Shirkuh intervention. Hugo was sent together with a temple knight named Gottfried as a negotiator for the Fatimid caliphs in Cairo, so that formally confirm the agreement. He received an audience in the palace at Cairo, whose splendor impressed the delegation. The Caliph swore under oath that he will abide by the contract. Hugo then requested that the Pact for Western custom to seal by shaking the Caliph naked hand. This idea was monstrous for the Islamic courtiers and her terror was enhanced when Hugo with the already reluctantly offered gloved hand would not be satisfied and the bare hand forced.

On the morning of March 18, 1167 there were between Amalric's army of crusaders and the Syrians under Shirkuh to the battle that won the Syrians. Amalric was able to flee with heavy losses, while Hugo and others were taken prisoner. When Shirkuh later depwoyed before Alexandria, he initially wanted Hugo to send as a messenger to the warehouse Amalric, but sent as Hugo refused another prisoner.

Hugo probably died later in Syrian captivity. Shirkuh and his nephew Saladin seized power in Egypt to 1171.

His son and heir, Guido Garnier, followed him in Caesarea.
