Hugo Eberhard Kratz von Scharfenstein

Hugo Everhard Cratz of Scharfstein ( * before 1595, † March 13, 1663 in Regensburg ) was from 1654 to 1663 Bishop of Worms. He was previously a diplomat and was among other Kurmainzer main envoy in negotiating the Peace of Westphalia.

Life

He came from the family of Cratz Scharfstein. The father was Anton Cratz of sharp stone. The mother was Catherine ( née von Metternich Zierel ). A brother was Johann Philipp Cratz of Scharffenstein, who first stood as a general in the Imperial and then in Swedish service.

Since 1602 Hugo Everhard had a prebend at the cathedral in Trier. This was followed by offices in Mainz and Worms. Part of his training was undertaken at the University of Siena. He is detectable in 1615.

In Trier, he was canon since 1623. Since 1627 he was archdeacon in Dietkirchen. Cratz of Scharfstein was provost from 1636 archbishop's chaplain since 1653. He was 1611-1663 and provost of the Foundation of St. Paulin.

Since 1629 he was choirmaster in Mainz. In 1638 he was Domkustos. He was born in Frankfurt am Main since 1638 dean of St. Bartholomew's pen. In the associated election and coronation church he founded in 1663 the choir altar.

In secular terms Cratz of Scharfstein was an imperial and Kurmainzer advice. He also served as treasurer in Electoral Mainz. He was in negotiating the Peace of Westphalia in 1645 the main ambassador of the Elector of Mainz and Reichserzkanzlers. But He left already in 1647, so that Nicholas George Reigersberg signed the contracts for Kurmainz.

He had tried in vain in 1650 for the post of coadjutor in Trier. In 1654 Cratz of sharp stone was then elected Bishop of Worms. Between 1655 and 1657 he served as imperial principal commissioner on Reichsdeputationstag in Frankfurt. Cratz of Scharfstein participated as Kurmainzer envoy in 1663 at the Diet of Regensburg. During the negotiations he died. After his death he was buried in the Collegiate Church of Our Lady in Worms.
