Hugo Schiltz

Hugo Schiltz ( born October 27, 1927 in Borsbeek; † August 5, 2006 in Antwerp) was a Belgian lawyer and politician. As a Fleming, he was a member of the dissolved party Volksunie and its successor organization SPIRIT, a member of parliament and later in the Senate, and was a minister in two cabinets, from 1981 to 1985 in the first Flemish Government and from 1988 to 1991 in the Belgian Federal Government under Wilfried Martens.

Career

During the Second World War Schiltz was a member of the National Socialist Youth of Flanders. This earned him after the war a several months in prison.

He studied law, economics and philosophy at the Catholic University in Leuven, and was a member of the Vlaams Katholiek Hoogstudenten Verbond, a university Federation of Catholic students from Flanders. In 1953 he became a lawyer and lecturer in business law. In 1958 he was elected to the city council of Antwerp - an office which he held until 1998. In 1963, he joined the party Volksunie, whose chairman he should be 1975-1979. Under his leadership, the party received a left - liberal orientation. He participated in the design of the Egmont Pact, its non-ratification was broken by the Parliament the government. The new, more left - liberal orientation of Volksunie, and his participation in the Egmont Pact, were the main reasons for the split in the Volksunie. The more radical, right-wing conservative wing of the Volksunie seceded and founded two new parties: the Vlaams Nationale Partij (Flemish National Party, VNP ) under the leadership of Karel Dillen and the Vlaamse Volkspartij (Flemish Peoples Party, VVP ) with Senator Claes the top. Later, from the merger of splinter parties, first the Vlaams Blok and finally Vlaams Belang. After 2001, the Volksunie in turn divided into N -VA and SPIRIT, Schiltz joined the latter.

Importance

Together with Wilfried Martens and Jean -Luc Dehaene Hugo Schiltz was largely responsible for the transformation of Belgium into a federal state. From 1994 to 1998 Schiltz was in an anti - Vlaams Blok coalition Finance Senator of Antwerp, in 1995 he received from the King of Belgium awarded the honorary title of Minister of State.

Hugo Schiltz died on 5 August 2006 in Antwerp from leukemia. He is buried at the Schoonselhof.
