Hugo Simberg
Hugo Gerhard Simberg (* June 24, 1873 in Hamina, † July 11, 1917 in Ähtäri, Finland) was a Finnish symbolist painter and graphic artist.
Life and work
Although he was supported by recognized Finnish painter Akseli Gallen - Kallela, were his pictures rather than untimely and strange. Simberg painted primarily images of death, suffering and demonic figures, as they have a strong presence in the Finnish folklore. However, he always saw also a humorous or ironic aspect of these issues. Of paramount importance is his fresco " The Garden of Death ", which is located in the cathedral of Tampere. In this work, it is an implementation of the fairy tale " The Story of a Mother " by Hans Christian Andersen.
One of his most famous works is the painting " The Wounded Angel", which he painted in 1903. The original is in the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki. In addition Simberg painted a larger version of the same painting for the cathedral of Tampere.
