Hugo Treffner

Hugo Hermann Fürchtegott Treffner ( born July 17, 1845 in Kanepi, † March 13, 1912 in Tartu) was an Estonian writer and educator. He was the founder of the prestigious Hugo Treffner Gymnasium in Tartu ( Dorpat former ).

Youth

Education

Treffner strongly supported the Estonian national awakening consciousness. Perhaps that's why he managed not to his university degree to find a Pastor location. In 1882 he presented therefore the request for establishment of a private school, which was granted the following year by the tsarist authorities. On January 1, 1884, the later Hugo Treffner Gymnasium in Tartu began its work, of which he remained until his death.

Estentum

In addition to his educational commitment Hugo Treffner strongly committed to the promotion of Estonian own identity and the Estonian self-consciousness. In 1875 he became chairman of the 1870 he co-founded the "Association student Estonians " (Estonian: Eesti Üliõpilaste Selts ). He was co-organizer of Estonian Song Festivals. From 1886 to 1891 he was editor and co-editor of the Estonian magazine Oma Maa, 1887, the magazine Linda and 1887/88 co-owner of Postimees. A well-known publicist, he was one of the most outstanding representatives of the Estonian national consciousness. In addition, he gave religious instruction at a girls' school in Tartu.

Elsa Ermas

From 1888, Treffner was married to Elsa Ermas who took over the leadership of Hugo Treffner school after his death in 1912.
