The Humboldt River (Eng. "Humboldt River ", named after the explorer Alexander von Humboldt ) is a 483 km long river in the U.S. state of Nevada. The Humboldt River is formed from the eastern and northern approach in Elko County in northeastern Nevada. The main tributaries come from the Ruby Mountains, Jarbidge Mountains, Independence Mountains and the eastern Humboldt Mountains. He heads west on the northern edge of the desert of the Great Basin. The river ultimately flows into the shallow basin of the Humboldt Sink. These lakes have no outlet. The water evaporates under the climatic conditions of the desert region. In large parts of its course it is accompanied by the rails of the Central Pacific Railroad and Interstate Highway 80.

Larger towns are Elko, Winnemucca and Eureka.

The Humboldt River was first described in 1828 by the British fur trader Peter Skene Ogden, 1834 drew Benjamin Bonneville on an expedition along the river and in 1841 took advantage of John Bidwell the Humboldt as part of the way when he claimed the first major Siedlerzug on the newly established California Trail California led.
