Humbug (Eng. mischief ) is the third studio album by British indie rock band Arctic Monkeys. It was published in the German-speaking area on 21 August 2009 at the indie label Domino Records and was able to reach number one on the British charts.

Creation and publication

Work on the album began in the summer of 2008, when the band gained his first ideas for a tour. The recordings on the album began in late 2008 and was first performed in the history of the band exclusively in the USA. The title My Propeller, Secret Door and Cornerstone developed under the production of James Ford, who was responsible even for the previous album, Favourite Worst Nightmare. When shooting place he chose the Mission Sound in Brooklyn, New York. All the other songs were produced by Joshua Homme, who achieved as the lead singer of Queens of the Stone Age fame. He said to the band, after he heard a recording of the piece Dance Little Liar. He later testified in an interview with Rolling Stone that it the voice of frontman Turner and the drumming of Helders would particularly like him at first. Homme chose the Rancho de la Luna (English Ranch of the Moon) for shooting from a studio in the California desert with analog recording devices. The recordings were completed in spring 2009.

The album was released in Japan on 19 August 2009, two days later it was the Benelux countries, Australia and Ireland published in the German-speaking countries. On 24 August 2009 Humbug appeared in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Latin America, a day later the CD was also available in the United States and Canada.

In the homeland of the band in the UK, the album reached number one on the album charts and remained in that position two weeks. More rankings at No. 1 has been achieved in Ireland and the Flemish part of Belgium. Second place for the album there was in Australia, the Netherlands and France. In New Zealand, the album reached the third place, fourth place achieved it in the Walloon region of Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and Canada. In the Spanish charts Humbug was out in fifth place in Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Portugal in seventh place. More rankings in the charts have been achieved in Finland eleventh, twelfth place in Sweden, in the United States with 15th place in Greece and Italy with number 18 and space in Mexico with 23.

The third single, My Propeller, rose to seventh place in Flanders, France at number 56 and in the UK at number 90 a.

Also Rob Sheffield of the music magazine Rolling Stone graded the album four out of five stars. He writes to the album that the new style adult Am working one but still notice the origins of the band. In particular, he raises it out the lyrics of Alex Turner, which have become more serious.

The German E- Zine Plattentests.de forgives seven out of ten. Critic Thomas Pilgrim also praises the new style alignment and development of the band, while criticized, however, that the band this sometimes überstrapaziere something.

Arne Janssen of cdstarts.de awards also seven out of ten possible points. He thinks that you initially have to get used to the new sound, the development was good but then to listen. He also praises the fact that the focus had shifted to the entire work.
