Hvítárvatn

The lake is located in Hvítárvatn Icelandic highlands. It is also called Hvítárlón. The lake is located in the municipality of Bláskógabyggð.

It is located near the southern part of the highland road Kjölur and east of the glacier Langjökull to 419 m altitude. Its surface is approximately 29.6 km ², its greatest depth of 84 m.

Name

The name refers to the Hvítá, which rose from the lake. It literally means white Riesachsee, indicating glacier water. The bright coloration of the lake stirred actually ago by its tributary Fúlakvisl, a river which rises Langjökull.

Valley glaciers of Langjökull

In addition, some of this great glacier valley glaciers extend to the lake, so that one sometimes sees there swim smaller icebergs.
