Hydramethylnon is an active ingredient for plant protection and a chemical compound from the group of Trifluormethylaminohydrazone.

Production and representation

Hydramethylnon can be obtained by a condensation reaction of 4- trifluoromethylbenzaldehyde with acetone, and the further reaction of the resulting intermediate with a hydrazine derivative.

Properties

Hydramethylnon as a technical product is a yellow to amber crystalline solid with a characteristic odor of vegetable oil. When exposed to light, it is rapidly degraded by photolysis.

Use

Hydramethylnon is used as an insecticide. It was originally developed in 1977 by the American Cyanamid Company and is, for example, under the name AMDRO, Combat, Faslan, Maxforce, Vulnerable or victories in trade. These products are slow acting poisons, which are mainly used against ants on lawns, pastures, ornamental, turf and similar non- agricultural land. Hydramethylnon is used in the USA, in the household and commercial establishments (outside the food industry ) against ants, silverfish, termites and cockroaches. The effect of hydramethylnon is based on the inhibition of the production of ATP in the mitochondria.

The active ingredient hydramethylnon is not approved in the EU as an active ingredient in pesticides. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, no pesticide product is approved, containing the active substance.
