Hydroxylamine hydrochloride, also referred to as hydroxylammonium chloride, is a colorless, crystalline inorganic chemical compound. It is the hydrochloric acid salt of the hydroxylamine and behave in most chemical reactions, such as unbound hydroxylamine, but is thermally stable.

Production

Hydroxylamine is accessible through

  • Electrolysis of a mixture of mercury nitrate, sulfuric acid and nitric acid ( This produces the sulfate), followed by the addition of barium chloride solution.
  • By boiling Kaliumhydroxylamindisulfonat, wherein the sulfate is formed as described above, from which the product is obtained with barium.

Properties

In Germany hydroxylamine hydrochloride is classified as an explosive substance of the substance group C according to the provisions of the Explosives Act.

Chemical Properties

Hydroxylamine hydrochloride reacts

  • With aldehydes or ketones to oximes
  • With carboxylic acids to hydroxamic acids.

Use

Hydroxylamine hydrochloride is a versatile reagent in pharmaceutical and organic synthesis, for example in the synthesis of oximes and oxime ethers from carbonyl compounds or for the synthesis of hydroxamic acids.
