Causes

Hyperostosis, can have many causes. Common to them is that there is a dysfunction of osteoclasts and / or osteoblasts, which leads to increased bone formation. Main triggers are

  • Irritation: mostly localized hyperostosis
  • Endocrine disorders: hyperparathyroidism, hypothyroidism, acromegaly
  • Metabolic disorders: chronic renal failure,
  • Poisoning ( fluorides, lead, vitamin A, arsenic, bismuth, strontium, beryllium, phosphorus)
  • Hereditary diseases: juvenile Paget's Disease ( Hyperostosis cortical juvenilis deformans ), van Buchem syndrome ( cortical hyperostosis generalisata ), osteopetrosis, sickle cell anemia
  • Idiopathien, diseases of unknown cause: Caffey syndrome ( cortical hyperostosis infantilis ), hyperostosis frontalis interna in the Morgagni 's syndrome, Cavarial - hyperostosis syndrome
  • Rheumatoid and age-related diseases: SAPHO syndrome, Forestier 's disease ( vertebral hyperostosis senilis ankylans )
  • Chronic infections: tuberculosis
  • Paraneoplastic syndromes: Pachydermoperiostosis with lung cancer, leukemia
