Hyphessobrycon

Schmucksalmler ( Hyphesso bentosi )

Hyphesso is a genus of freshwater fish from the family of the Real tetras ( Characidae ). The name Hyphesso consists of the words " hyphesso " (small ) and " Brycon" ( Jaws ), which on the strong teeth of this genus attributed tetras is played. The genus consists of about 125 species, but is not regarded as monophyletic. Hyphesso species are usually quite small, socially -living fish that are native to the northern and central South America. Very few species are also found in Central America.

Features

Hyphesso species have a more or less elongated, in many species quite high-backed body. The anal fin is long, an adipose fin present. The lateral line is incomplete. From the closely related genus Hemigrammus the genus differs in the dentition and the unscaled base of the tail. Hyphesso species from two to seven inches long.

Way of life

Hyphesso species usually show only in youth or concern or risk a tendency to swarm formation. Otherwise they live socially in groups in an effort to maintain a minimum distance mutual. In particular, males tend to Kommentkämpfen and defend small territories to temporarily preferred Standplätz.

System

The genus Hyphesso is comparatively rich in species, especially as some formerly independent genera were merged with Hyphesso in the wake of recent rankings. The genus Hyphesso since a revision of the Rosy Tetra's 1997 Stanley Weitzman & Lisa Palmer also include the species of the genus Megalamphodus resolved.

Hunting and

The genus includes many of the most popular aquarium fish. In fact, leaving most of their representatives hold well in captivity and breed, but it should be taken to ensure that the animals are sociable and therefore should be kept in groups of at least ten copies.

Conversely, it must be ensured that, in the limited space of an aquarium by too many individuals the necessary minimum distance is not exceeded durable ( species-specific overstocking ). Many species, such as the Blutsalmler Hyphessobrycon eques then tend to intraspecific aggression which can lead to damage fighting with significant injuries.
