Hyposmia

The medical term refers to the hyposmia in contrast to the anosmia only incomplete loss of smell. Of the patients, hyposmia is mostly perceived as taste disturbance, since large parts of our taste experience via the sense of smell.

Often the hyposmia occurs after viral infections that lead to inflammation in the nasal mucosa ( hypertrophic rhinitis).

Other possible causes of hyposmia are:

  • Taking antihistamines, antidepressants or ACE inhibitors
  • Inhalation of chlorine or benzene, or long-term contact with wood or metal dust or smoke.
  • A zinc deficiency
  • The Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) and Parkinson's disease.
  • As a symptom of Empty Nose Syndrome
  • After injuries in the area of the face
  • Also in Alzheimer 's disease and the Kallmann syndrome may be a hyposmia.

The complete loss of smell is called anosmia.
