Hyundai Epsilon engine

Epsilon is a series of three-and four-cylinder petrol engines manufacturer Hyundai Motor Group with simple overhead camshaft ( SOHC) and three valves per cylinder. The engines are built in Ulsan ( South Korea) and Irrungattukatoi (India).

The engine block is made of cast iron, the cylinder head in light alloy. The smallest engine with 0.8 liter displacement is included only in the first and current series. The new edition differs significantly from its predecessor. This began the series with a bore of 63 mm and 64 mm stroke at 97.5 kg dry weight. The middle engine has 66 mm bore and 73 mm stroke. As the largest of the series ( 67 mm bore and 77 mm stroke) and weighs 83.9 kg with almost two kilograms more than the successor to Hyundai KIA Kappa with aluminum housing and larger engines. Both sizes are published in two editions. Of the latter, 2011, the new three-cylinder engine was derived. The idle speed of the epsilon- series is 850 rpm and increases with active air-conditioning at 900 revolutions per minute.

The camshaft is driven by a toothed belt, the motors are not free rotor. The inspection is every 60,000 km, the timing belt replacement model based every 80,000 - 90,000 km provided.

Epsilon

The average per capita real consumption of the 1.0 -liter engine is 6.6 l/100 km, the 0.8 - liter was not offered in Europe.

Epsilon DLI

2001 received the Epsilon series a first major overhaul, which concerned only the 1.0 -liter engine, which received an e in the engine code for differentiation. The 0.8 -liter engine was not further developed and ran out in the same year. The ignition distributor with mechanical ignition interruption was exchanged for a non-contact and thus wear poorer ignition. Their electronic controller also specifies the ignition timing and thus leads to more efficient combustion. It increased the power of the 1.0 - liter engine to 3 kW and resulted in a more rounded engine running.

The term DLI was as the following series used only in the Indian market, but is the only differentiation available. It stands for the contactless ignition system, " distributorless Ignition".

The average per capita real consumption fell by 0.1 to 6.5 l/100 km.

Epsilon eRLX

To counteract against the Indian competition be too high perceived consumption of the epsilon- motors, 2002 Hyundai launched a technical revision, and a comprehensive advertising campaign for the eRLX called revision. Here, for the first time extensive use of comparative advertising was made. Instead of the discontinued 0.8 -liter variant came as another model to the 1.1 - liter. There lower-friction piston rings and valve trains were used - means "Rotary Head Intelligent Valve Actuator" ( RHiATM ). The central component is but the supplied supplied by Bosch engine control unit. This regulates situational injection quantity and ignition timing. The Multipoint injection enabled this, simultaneously at full load per two injectors while they are switched successively in partial load operation. This innovation called Hyundai " Differentially Programmed Intelligent Injection" ( DPiITM ). The so- enriched mixture is then ignited adapted to the driving situation and quality of fuel from the "Real Time Intelligent Ignition" ( RTiITM ). The former engine control unit instead used fixed characteristics without reference to the current ( fuel ) situation. Variations in quality of the fuel also offsets the engine with a " Fuel Quality Immunizer " whose function Hyundai not further explained, but should consist of the ignition system and knock sensor itself.

The average per capita real consumption fell by one tenth of a liter to 6.4 l/100 km in about 100 kg heavier Getz he is 6.8 l

Epsilon iRDE

2004 we launched again revised penultimate Epsilon series. Your shortcut points to the new motor control " intelligent Responsive Drive Engine", which takes into account the increased through new pistons 10.1 compression. She is also the cause of the achieved power increase. Her debut was in 2004 KIA Picanto, followed in 2005 by the Hyundai Getz 67 hp from its top version of the series. Only in 2008 then took place in Hyundai i10 also marketing debut with the use of the new shortcut instead - in the markets in which the previous abbreviation have been marketed.

The average per capita real consumption of the series is 6.4 l/100 km.

Problems

Before the 2007 model year ( which began in October 2006) was the screw of the timing belt front wheel on some 1.1L iRDE in KIA Picanto bit too short. As a result, it may have been damaged by the proposed tightening force on the thread at the factory. Thus, it takes insufficient, the cylindrical pinion can move easily and not continue the timing belt exactly. At the upper end of the belt changes the timing of valve opening and thus leads to a problematic start-up behavior, irregular, louder running, power loss and in some cases, damage to the engine, the crankshaft should be worn. KIA moved during inspections in manufacturer workshops this screw, a recall did not take place (see ). The crankshaft itself was replaced on an individual basis by the improved variant of the model year 2007. In later years of construction, this problem has not occurred.

Between April and July 2004, by a likewise unsuitable screw below the camshaft isolated cooling water into the oil, which reacts with a light lubricating film. Visible it is already on the filler neck, parallel to the decrease in cooling water level, the signals the motor or temperature warning light. If the coolant level is very low, the engine goes into a low-power emergency program to protect against overheating. The screw was replaced in May 2005 as part of a service action. When diluted oil, the wear increases due to the reduced lubricity.

Before the Year 2006 followed carwash or rain sporadically misfiring. Embrittle the cladding of the harness or is damaged by raccoon, it allows water to pass through, the short-circuiting effect on the ignition fault codes P0300 P0303 leads to ( in cylinders 1 to 4). The accompanying engine light usually appears in such defects even after shaking the harness that runs from the fuse box to the spark plugs. Since misfiring cause incomplete combustion, the oxygen sensor reports too high levels of pollutants.

Epsilon iRDE 2

Have changed the pistons and piston rings, which were reduced friction with a coating. In addition, the diameter of inlet and exhaust valves were enlarged and their opening stroke increases, resulting in more air flow results. This allows more fuel to be added, which causes 2 hp more power. The torque remained at 99 Nm. His performance now is therefore similar to that of the 0.8 - liter turbo engine from the first Epsilon Series of 1998 (see ).

The standard consumption is not decreased by 0.3 to 4.7 l/100 km, the real consumption.

2011 was followed by a 0.8 - liter three- cylinder for the Hyundai Eon. As the only Epsilon engine, it has a " Battery Management System ". It reduces or increases the use of the same light dynamoelectric machine and thus the cost for the driving motor. During braking it leaves the alternator at full load current for the battery produce that is picked up again during the next acceleration process to make the alternator run then possible load arm. Thus, the tunneling is independent of the switched-on air conditioning, report car magazines. Based on the 1.1 L but show up despite strong balance shaft vibrations reach the shifter particularly in the ( silent ) idle. Reason, the shift rods, used in place of the rest of the model range shift cables. A clear starting weakness to 1500, despite the Group tours typical smooth-running clutch let stand back the new development behind the other three cylinders of the target markets of India, Philippines, Vietnam and Chile. The standard consumption tests deviate from the European off significantly, so the 4.7 l/100 km are not directly comparable. Real there are 5.8 l/100 km, half a liter under the four-cylinder and 230 kg heavier i10.
