Style and film criticism

An essential element of the film that was released in the U.S. under the title " Crown of Thorns " in theaters, was the arrangement of the decoration, was at the resort to known representations in the visual arts. A murderer sees a Passion play and is refined by the Passion of Christ. From einfalt rich beauty, maternal, soft transfigured, Henny Porten as a Madonna by Raphael was painted. From imaginative beauty, cocky, flirting, and later with thick tears Asta Nielsen as a sinner Mary Magdalene. In the movie impossible role of Christ himself tried in vain the Russian emigrant Grigori Chmara, a wedded husband of Nielsen. " I.N.R.I. " failed, despite Werner Krauss as Pontius Pilate, despite Alexander Granach as Judas.

The film is considered the first great German Bible feature film. In a novel based, it went Wiene a (religious ) orientation in the politically and economically uncertain time during production. The film adaptation of the life of Jesus was first integrated into a framework for action, which refers to the confrontation of Christianity with Communism.
