Iakob Nikoladze

Jacob Nikoladze (Georgian იაკობ ნიკოლაძე; * 16 Maijul / May 28 1876greg in Kutaisi, .. † March 10, 1951 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian sculptor. He designed the national flag of the first Georgian Republic.

Life

His first artistic training was Jacob Nikoladze at the Moscow Stroganov Art School and the Art School of Odessa. In 1899 he went to Paris, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and worked for a while as a student of Auguste Rodin. Later he returned to his home, where he worked from the early twenties as a professor at the Tbilisi Art Academy, whose founders he had heard.

Nikoladze designed the national flag of the Democratic Republic of Georgia (1918-1921), which again the flag of Georgia was after the independence of Georgia from 1991 to 2004. In 1939 he joined the Communist Party.

A large part of his work make portrait work. Among them is the tomb of the poet Ilia Chavchavadze Georgian but also unofficial works, including representations of Lenin and Stalin.

Nikoladses ashes were interred in the Pantheon on the mountain Mtazminda in Tbilisi.

Awards

He received numerous state awards, including the People's Artist of the Georgian SSR.
