Iakob Tsurtaveli

James Zurtaweli (Georgian იაკობ ცურტაველი; 5th century) was a Georgian Orthodox priest and writer. He wrote the oldest surviving book of Georgian literature.

Between 476 and 483 he wrote the Martyrdom of Saint Shushanik (Georgian - წამებაჲ წმიდისა შუშანიკისი დედოფლისაჲ - C'amebaj c'midisa Shushanik'isi dedoplisaj ). It is a hagiographic work in pre-Christian writing tradition. The work describes the life of Georgian Princess Shushanik (German Susanne ) who died because they refused to renounce Christianity. The content is based on real events. Zurtaweli was the confessor of the main character and had visited over the years in prison.
