Ian Micallef

Ian Micallef ( born September 6, 1969 in Gzira, Malta) was, according to a re-election in May 2008, May 2006 to October 2010 President of the Chamber of Local Authorities of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe.

Ian Micallef has a doctorate in law ( specializing in European law) and since 1994 local council in Gzira (Malta ) and since 1996 President of the Association of Maltese town and community councils. His international political career began in 1996 when he became chairman of the Maltese delegation to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe. Since 2000 he is also active as a board member of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum. Ian Micallef was already Vice - President of the Committee of the Regions of the European Union and member of the Council for Democratic Elections of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. In May 2004 he was elected as representative of the European People's Party Vice - President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities. He has also collaborated in the organization of multiple international conferences of Europe and was responsible for reports on the situation of local democracy in various Member States of the Council of Europe.
