Ian Wilson (composer)

Ian Wilson ( born 1964 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish composer.

Life and work

Wilson earned her doctorate in composition at the University of Ulster who gave his orchestral work Rise in Celebration to celebrate its tenth anniversary, commissioned in 1993. He wrote, inter alia, two operas, works for organ, cello, alto saxophone, violin, marimba and piano, orchestral works, eight string quartets and several works for chamber music, songs, and multimedia. His compositions were, inter alia, by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Ulster Philharmonic, Belgrade Philharmonic and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and Hugh Tinney listed.

On the Ultima Festival in Oslo Wilson received the Composition Prize for Running, Thinking, Finding for Orchestra, 1991; In 1992 he was awarded the Macaulay Fellowship from the Arts Council of Ireland and was elected to the Irish Artists' Association Aosdána 1998. From 2000 to 2003 he was AHRB Research Fellow in Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Ulster. Since 2002 Wilson is director of the Sligo New Music Festival from 2006 to 2009 he was Composer-in - Association of California's Camerata Pacifica ensemble. In 2009 he released the album Double Trio, a musical work for three jazz - and three classical musicians, inspired by the language of the people and the everyday noises in Glencullen, County South Dublin at Diatribe Recordings. His compositions are published by Ricordi London and Universal Edition.
