IAR-14

The IAR 14 was a Romanian fighter plane. It was developed in 1933 by Intreprinderea Aeronáutica Română and used by the air forces of Romania. The IAR -14 was a similar pattern, the IAR -12, back.

History

The development of the IAR -14 began development of its predecessor, IAR -12, which was designed by Elie Carafoli at the beginning of the 1930s and 1932 for the first time flew. It was in this type is a low-wing monoplane of mixed fiber, which was powered by a 450 hp Lorraine -Dietrich W motor 12Eb and was armed with two 7.7 mm machine guns from Vickers. The IAR -12 was turn back to the IAR -11 by 1930.

Improving the aerodynamics of the IAR -12 and replacement of the engine with a V-engine Hispano -Suiza 12Mc led 1934 replacement type IAR -13, which competed with the Polish PZL P.11 a tender for the air forces of Romania for a new fighter types. Since the Romanian military was more impressed by the gull wing shape of the structure of the PZL P.11 than by the low-wing monoplane of IAR, the award eventually went to the Polish competition pattern, which should be also manufactured by IAR under license.

The development of an own Jagdeinsitzers has not been abandoned at IAR. Again, the aerodynamic properties of the IAR 13 has been improved by reducing the size of the main wing and revisions to the form of the stern. In addition, again came the Lorraine -Dietrich 12Eb used. Although this engine was the one inferior in terms of performance of Hispano -Suiza, he had the advantage that it could be manufactured by IAR under license. The armament consisted still of the two 7.7 -mm machine guns from Vickers.

The changes to the design of the now referred to as IAR -14 type prompted the Romanian Air Force to order a series of 20 for testing purposes. The aircraft were delivered in 1934 and extensively studied, after which they were used for training purposes. In this role, they were used to in the Second World War into it.
