Ibelin

Ibelin, today Yavne in Israel, known in the Roman Empire Iamnia since ancient times, was a strategically important location. In the 12th century, the time of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, was here a crusader castle, after calling himself an essential for the Kingdom family. Ibelin lies between Jaffa and Ashkelon near Montgisard and Ramlah.

Ibelin is not to be confused with the Arab- Israeli town I'billin in the North District.

Ashkelon was in the first 50 years of the Kingdom of Jerusalem still under Fatimid rule, Egyptian armies fell from here annually in the territory of the Crusaders. The Ibelin Castle was built by King Fulk I. 1134-1141 to counter these attacks. The original castle had four towers.

The Ibelin family derived its origin from the Counts of Chartres. However, the actual progenitor of the family was Barisan, the 1141 was given dominion and castle of Fulk. Barisan married Helvis of Ramlah, her children were Hugo, Baldwin, Barisan, Ermengarde and Stephanie. The younger Barisan became known as Balian. The family had next to Ibelin also Ramlah and Nablus, but they lost these possessions in 1187 was still alive Balian of Saladin. Saladin destroy at least 1191, the castle, it was not rebuilt.

The Ibelin family survived and retained great influence among the barons of the kingdom. In the 13th century they were the lords of Beirut and had great influence in the Kingdom of Cyprus. The best known Ibelin this time are two lawyers named John of Ibelin.

The title then passed to the Count of Jaffa and Ascalon.
