Iberia (theme)

Iberia (Greek: θέμα ' Ιβηρίας ) was a Byzantine military province ( theme). The name comes from the Caucasian kingdom of Iberia.

History

Iberia was formed in 1001 as a result of the annexation of the southern part of the Georgian Kingdom of Tao Klardschetien and subsequent annexations of several Armenian kingdoms by Emperor Basil II.

The capital of the topic was moved to the conquest by the Seljuk Turks in 1064 by Anis Theodosiopolis (Karin ).

Since 1071 Gregor Pakourianos was governor of the topic. 1074 was the subject of Iberia with other Byzantine territories in Eastern Anatolia to the Seljuk lost.
