Iberian gudgeon

Gobio lozanoi is a freshwater fish of the carp family (Cyprinidae ). The species was first described in 2004, when it was found by examining the mitochondrial DNA that the gudgeons of the Iberian peninsula differ from Gobio gobio and form an independent way. The species was named in honor of Luis Lozano Rey (1879-1958), a Spanish naturalist and ichthyologist.

Features

Gobio lozanoi has a typical elongated and slightly flattened Gründlingsgestalt and is 12 cm long. The head is wider and shorter than in the Central European gudgeon (G. gobio ) that are barbels, except for the population in the Adour and Bidasoa, longer and extend to the posterior margin of the eyes. The head length is 25 to 28% of standard length, head height 62 to 72 % of head length. Eye diameter is 1.2 to 1.8 times greater than the distance of the eyes from each other. The scales are larger than in the gudgeon. The distance between the chest and abdominal fins is greater than that between pelvic fins and anal fin. The height of the tail fin stem is 1.6 to 2 times the length.

Gobio lozanoi is above the sideline gray or brown, dyed light brown below. Along the sidelines a longitudinal band pulls 6-12 dark spots below the eyes there is a characteristic dark, long spot. With the exception of the ventral side of the scales are edged dark.

Distribution and habitat

The circulation area covers the north and the center of the Iberian Peninsula and the Adour in southwest France. Gobio lozanoi missing there only in Galicia, in most of Catalonia, on the north coast in Asturias and Cantabria. Habitats are rivers and streams with clear water and sandy or gravel base in the highlands and in the lowlands. Rivers where the fish are found Bidasoa, Duero, Ebro, the upper reaches of the Guadiana, Guadalquivir, Júcar, the headwaters of the Llobregat, Mondego, Mijares, Nalon, Nansa, Rio Miño, Río Segura, Tajo and Turia.
