Ibiza (town)

Ibiza Town ( Eivissa in Catalan ) is the capital of the Spanish Balearic island of Ibiza. It is located on the southeast coast of the island.

Name

The Spanish and formerly official name of the city is Ibiza. As part of the implementation of the law on language normalization of the Balearic Islands was renamed the Catalan names Ciutat d' Eivissa was. The locals call their city usually simple Vila. International predominantly the name Ibiza is still used.

History

The city was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians. They named both the town and the island after the god Bes Ebusim. From the Phoenicians the old town ( Dalt Vila ), the Puig des Molins ( "Mill Hill" ) is still a large necropolis west, obtained, which was later used by the Romans. Here more than 4000 Punic and Roman tombs were discovered. Grave goods found there you can visit at the foot of the hill today at the Museu Monogràfic. In January 2011, the remains of a Phoenician settlement and a Roman temple were uncovered during construction work at the citadel for the first time.

The massive defensive walls of Dalt Vila, which still dominate the skyline of Ibiza town, were built under the Moorish rule ( 9th to 13th century). From the Moors, the city was named Yabisa. Under the Aragonese and Spanish kings, the fort was expanded. In the 1990s, some of them already heavily ruined walls have been restored. 1999 has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage site,.

Population

In Ibiza town with 50 401 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) just over a third of the permanent island residents. The population growth is quite high since the beginning of mass tourism in the 1960s. It is since the mid-1990s, on average, nearly 4% annually. The population has risen accordingly just in the period 1996-2008 by 59 %.

Note: The higher population in the years 1877 and 1887 is due to the fact that at that time belonged to the municipality of Formentera Ibiza Town.

While population growth was driven initially by the influx of workers from the Spanish mainland, the population has been increasing since the 1990s and even more strongly since the turn of the millennium, mainly due to the high influx of foreigners. As a result, the proportion of locals has declined in recent decades more and more. Today, only 39.5% of its inhabitants are native of the Balearic Islands and 33.6 % from Ibiza Town.

The population is male and 51.7 % female to 48.3 %.

A resident of Ibiza Town is called in Catalan eivissenc (Spanish ibicenco ), a resident eivissenca ( ibicenca ).

The proportion of foreigners with 24.8% (2008, only main residence ) is very high and still rising. In 1991 lived with 2.3% hardly any foreigners in Ibiza Town. The number of foreigners has its own seven-fold in the period from 2000 to 2008. The proportion of foreign-born people was 27.5 %.
