Ice hockey at the 2003 Asian Winter Games
The hockey competitions of the Fifth Asian Winter Games were held from January 30 to February 7, 2003 in the Japanese prefecture of Aomori in the cities of Hachinohe and Misawa instead. Besides the host nation Japan participated in the men's five other countries - South Korea, the People's Republic of China, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Thailand - in the contest. The gold medal secured first time Japan, which had no tournament defeat. Behind Kazakhstan and China won the other medals.
At the ice hockey tournament for women five teams participated, thereby creating a new record was set. The participants were the host nation, South Korea, North Korea, Kazakhstan and the People's Republic of China. The title for the first time secured Kazakhstan, which remained undefeated in all games. Japan won silver, China took bronze.

Venues
The tournament took place in the men's ice rink in Hachinohe Niida. The women played in Misawa Ice Arena in Misawa.

The six participants were first divided into two groups of three teams. They played in a single round, the two final round participants from each group.
After the preliminary round, the two last-place teams completed the game for fifth place. The four final round participants were playing in a semifinal of the two finalists. The winner of it won the gold medal.
