I had a lot of grief ( BWV 21) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Formation

The emergence of this cantata is unclear. What is certain is that it was performed on the 3rd Sunday after Trinity in Weimar in 1714 for the first time, though not yet with all sets of the final text of 1723. Was but you already earlier. Perhaps Bach composed them or compiled from existing single pieces when he in 1713 applied for the position of organist in Halle. It is also possible that the two parts of the cantata were originally planned as per his own works. The text of the cantata probably comes from Salomon Franck.
