Icko Iben

Ičko Iben, Jr. (* June 27, 1931 in Champaign, Illinois) is an American astronomer.

Iben, son of who was born in Germany librarian Ičko Iben (1900-1971) acquired, according to studies at Harvard University and the University of Illinois at Urbana -Champaign, 1958 PhD. After various other stations in 1972 he was professor of astronomy and physics at the University of Illinois, which he belongs to this day.

Iben made important contributions to the theory of the structure of stars and stellar evolution, and associated with this development changes the elemental abundances from the stellar interior to the observable stellar atmospheres. He dealt with the role of convection in red giants and AGB stars and the formation of planetary nebulae. In three highly cited review articles from 1967, 1974 and 1983, he described the evolution of stars, especially after the phase on the main sequence of the Hertzsprung- Russell diagram. Further work showed that supernovae arise from type I in binary systems.
