Idel-Ural (Legion)
The Legion Idel -Ural was set up by the German Wehrmacht in 1942 of representatives of Turkic peoples in the Soviet Union. In several battalions served in the Legion a total of approximately 12,500 people. On February 23, 1943 in Vitebsk almost the whole battalion ran 825 ( about 900 people) over to the partisans. Many of them fell victim to repression.
One of the best known representatives of the resistance within the Legion Idel -Ural against the Germans was the Tatar poet Musa Cälil.
