IEC 60870

The IEC 60870 International Electrotechnical Commission describes a general, open communication standard for industrial automation, in the areas of infrastructure automation ( substation control system, remote control, power system control ) is applied. Although this protocol represents a universal standard, but leaves a wide scope for specific applications.

In Germany, the IEC 60870 is published as DIN standard DIN EN 60870.

Survey

The standard for telecontrol system based on the following IEC - Specifications:

  • IEC 60870-5-1 transmission frame formats
  • IEC 60870-5-2 transmission procedures
  • IEC 60870-5-3 structure of the application data
  • IEC 60870-5-4 Definition and Coding of information elements
  • IEC 60870-5-5 Basic Application Functions

With the standard IEC 60870-5 has been reached that equipment and facilities of the telecontrol and substation control different manufacturers can communicate with each other without fundamental adaptation developments.

The very general description of the protocol standards makes it necessary for the standard series IEC 60870-5 to be broken down into individual parts in order to achieve interoperability between the communicating devices. The following parts of IEC 60870-5 series of standards have become important:

  • IEC 60870-5-101 Application-specific standard for telecontrol tasks (serial communication )
  • IEC 60870-5-102 Basic functions for the Meter Count
  • IEC 60870-5-103 standard for protecting data disposal ( within a switchgear )
  • IEC 60870-5-104 Application-specific standard for telecontrol tasks in IP networks

The interface uses a signal- oriented data model. Each message represents a data point, such as a measured value, setpoint, command or alarm. This telegram is defined by an address and a data type. The address then determines at what signal it is, that is, the sender and receiver must know the meaning of the address.

The series of standards has been found especially in Europe and Asia -wide dissemination in communication networks for monitoring and control of infrastructure networks (electricity, gas, water, pipelines, etc.).

For the crosslinking of instrumentation and control equipment of IEC following specification was created:

  • IEC 60870-6 remote control protocol, compatible with the ISO and ITU standards

IEC 60870-5-101

The IEC 60870-5-101 is an official communication standard for telecontrol.

The protocol is used as a general transmission protocol between (network) control systems and substations. The messages are typically transmitted over serial links (ITU-T V.24 (EIA -232) / ITU-T V.28 ). It is an asynchronous protocol with Hamming distance 4 The telegram frame corresponds FT1.2.

With the IEC 60870-5-101 has been reached that equipment and facilities of the telecontrol and substation control different manufacturers can communicate with each other without fundamental adaptation developments. The degrees of freedom of the standard allow different vendor-specific profiles (eg the message types and functions used ). With the help of an interoperability list, the profiles can be matched. This standard has been found mainly in Europe and Asia -wide distribution.

IEC 60870-5-102

The IEC 60870-5-102 is an official communication standard for telecontrol.

The protocol used for the transmission of meter readings in electricity networks. The messages are typically transmitted over serial links and the telegram frame corresponds FT1.2.

IEC 60870-5-103

The IEC 60870-5-103 is an official communication standard for the protective functions of the digital protection devices within a substation control system to transmit data protection.

Due to the high market penetration in Europe one has gone over to include in addition to digital protection devices and control devices and controllers. The control commands and control messages are transported within the protocol in the private sector, which is device-specific documents.

IEC 60870-5-104

The IEC 60870-5-104 is a common communication protocol between (network) control systems and substations.

The messages are transmitted over the Internet Protocol TCP / IP. The protocol has general skills in the context of SCADA applications.

In contrast to IEC 60870-5-101, which builds connections via serial interfaces, the IEC 60870-5-104 interface allows communication over networks (LAN and WAN). In this case, commercially available networking components (routers ) are used ( in industrial switchgear components should be used). Here, as the standard of the TCP port 2404 is used.

With the IEC 60870-5-104 has been reached that equipment and facilities of the telemetry and control systems from different manufacturers without fundamental adaptation developments can communicate. The degrees of freedom of the standard allow different vendor-specific profiles (eg, the message types and functions used ). With the help of an interoperability list, the profiles can be matched. This standard has been found mainly in Europe and Asia -wide distribution.

The telecontrol protocol IEC 60870-5-104 is also suitable as a field or station bus. Its use as a ward while also allowing direct communication between individual devices.

As a station or field, based on TCP / IP, is now also IEC 61850, which is based on an object-oriented data model used.

IEC 60870-6

TASE.2 is part of the standard IEC 60870-6, which describes the services that the protocol and object model. WIth IEC 60870-6 TASE.2 be information users and information providers in a standardized way coupled. This coupling is independent of operating system platforms (UNIX, Windows, ...) and transmission media (TCP / IP, ISO / OSI, fieldbus, ...). The standard is based on the standard ISO 9506 Manufacturing Messaging Specification (MMS).
