IF Björklöven

The IF Björklöven is a Swedish professional ice hockey club that plays in the 2013/14 season in the second highest Swedish league, Allsvenskan. The team played 15 seasons until 2001, long with some interruptions in the Elitserien and was founded in 1987 for the first and only time Swedish ice hockey champions. Play their home games from the club in the 6,000 -seat arena Umeå.

History

The IF Björklöven was founded in 1970 with the merger of the departments of the Hockey IFK Umeå and Sandåkerns SK, two renowned Swedish ice hockey teams. 1976 succeeded in rising to the first division, after the direct Wiederab and rise in 1978 it managed to establish itself in the Elitserien and to become one of the most successful Swedish ice hockey team of the 1980s.

After the championship in 1987 succeeded the next year once the second runner-up after 1982, but even at the end of next season followed by relegation to the second division a setback from which the club to this day could not recover properly. One rose in the 1990s several times back in the Elitserien on, it was never able the team to permanently remain in the first league. Due to financial problems Björklöven received in the 2010/11 season, no license for the Allsvenskan and got down to the third tier, the Division 1. On 5 April 2013, the resurgence in the Allsvenskan succeeded.

Home ground

The Umeå Arena is used for the home matches of the club. Since a renovation 2001, the arena holds 6,000 spectators. The building was originally built in 1963 and called Umeå Ishall. 2001, the building has been thoroughly renovated and expanded the capacity of 4450 to 6000 spectators. At the opening of the building in Umeå Arena has been renamed. The highest average attendance reached IF Björklöven in the 1980/81 season, when an average of 4261 spectators attended the home games of the club. Besides IF Björklöven yet another hockey club plays its home games in the arena, the Tegs SK.
