If I Were a Bell

If I Were a Bell is a composition by Frank Loesser.

Loesser wrote the song for the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls, which premiered in November 1950. In the show, If I Were a Bell from "Sister Sarah " sung, shown at the premiere of Isabel Bigley.

By including Miles Davis on the album Relaxin 'with the Miles Davis Quintet of 1956 was given the title at a much played jazz standard. Had the composition until 1965 ( Plugged Nickel ) a firm place in the repertoire of Miles Davis and appeared on many live recordings. After that, the song of countless musicians of modern jazz was played. He was so strong connected with Miles Davis that he is often mistakenly thought of his own composition.

Keith Jarrett took the title in 1995 along with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, the so-called "Standards Trio", in live performance at the Blue Note on. Other important recordings of If I Were a Bell come from Ella Fitzgerald, Milt Jackson and Ray Brown, Joe Pass and Shelly Manne & His Men
