Ignác Raab

Ignaz Viktorin Raab, also Ignatius Victorin Raab, falsely Ignaz Joseph Raab, Czech Ignatius Viktorin Raab ( born September 5, 1715 in Nechanic; † February 2nd 1787 in Velehrad ) was a Bohemian church painter of the late Baroque and Rococo.

Life

Raab was born the twelfth child of Franz Raab. Because he was artistically gifted, his father sent him to training as Jičín Baroque painter Johann Georg Major (Jan Jiří Major), a native of Friuli.

In 1744 Raab joined in Brno as a novice in the Society of Jesus. After completing the two-year novitiate Raab worked in various religious houses, so 1747 in Uherský Brod, 1750 in Uherské Hradiště, 1751 in Olomouc 1752 in Jihlava, where he worked primarily as a painter. In Kutna Hora, where he worked 1754-1756, Raab worked as an assistant at the fabric and worked in the last year as a painter. Between 1758 and 1771 Raab worked at the Prague Clementinum, where he among other things, 21 portraits from the life of St. Aloysius Gonzaga and 26 of St.. Stanislaus Kostka created. In 1770 he interrupted his work at the Clementinum and written for the Church of St. Ignatius in the New Town four altarpieces. One of his employees was at this time the painter Josef Kramolín. Furthermore, Rabb was also active in Klatovy and Opava.

After the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773 Raab found by the Cistercian recording in Velehrad monastery. He also created a number of paintings. Raab at that time had passed its artistic peak and in its light Rokostil found to increase classical Elemante feeder. As in 1784, the monastery Velehrad was dissolved as part of the Josephine reforms, Raab had to re- orientate his life. He decided to remain in Velehrad and earned his living as a painter. His pictures almost never signed Raab.

Raab created many altarpieces and frescoes. These include, inter alia, Altarpieces in the church of St. Ignatius in the New Town, the Church of St. Nicholas in the Lesser Town, the St. Bartholomew church in Kolin, the Church in Ostředek, the monastery church of St. Marienthal, Trinity church Fulnek, the Jacob's Church in Jičín, the Parish Church of St. Hippolytus in Hradiště sv. Hypolita, the parish church of the Assumption and St. John of Nepomuk in Kvasice, the Piaristenkirche Visitation in Bila Voda, the Sanctuary Křtiny and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows in Bohosudov and vault frescoes in the Monastery Church of the Assumption in Strahov.
