Ignacio Chapela (* 1959 ) is a Mexican- American microbiologist, ecologist and mycologist at the University of California, Berkeley. He holds the post of associate professor there for microbial ecology.

He is published especially for a 2001 in the journal Nature, controversial articles on the transition of maize transgenes into wild populations of maize known. As a result, Chapela revealed as outspoken critic of the cooperation between the University of California and the biotechnology industry.

In a later confrontation with the university, which had initially rejected his continued employment, Chapela accused her political motives.

Chapela is also known for his work on natural resources and indigenous rights.

Chapela is a Senior Researcher at GenØk, the National Center for Biosafety in Norway.
