Ignacy Chrzanowski

Ignacy Chrzanowski ( born February 5, 1866 in Stok Lacki; † January 19, 1940 in Sachsenhausen concentration camp ) was a Polish literary scholar. He is considered the founder of the Polish historical literature.

The gymnasium in Warsaw he attended from 1876 to 1883. At the Warsaw University he studied classical philology from 1883 to 1888. He expanded his studies from 1891 through study trips to Paris, Breslau ( 1890-1891 ) and Berlin ( 1891-1894 ), where he took the tray Slavic philology. After returning to Poland he taught from 1894 to 1910 in Warsaw as a teacher. He also published several literary works.

Corresponding Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences ( PAU ), he was in 1906. In 1910 he received an appointment at the Jagiellonian University ( UJ ) as Professor of the History of Polish Literature in Krakow. In 1914 he was appointed a full member of the PAU. In 1931, he retired.

The UJ honored him in 1936 with the award of the award of the title of Professor hc On Monday, November 6, 1939, he was arrested by the SS -Sturmbannführer Bruno Müller with more than 100 professors at the special action Krakow and deported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

Chrzanowski was second cousin by Henryk Sienkiewicz and related to Joachim Lelewel, about which he has published.
