Igor of Kiev

Igor ( * before 912, † 945), the son of Rurik, to the wise have 912 taken control of the later Kievan Rus and occupied until 945, after a reign of phase by Oleg.

He is one of the first Kievan princes, in which one can assume with some certainty that he really lived, and so was not a legendary figure. After his accession to power of he first led war against the Slavic tribe of the Drevlianians, who had tried to shake off his to pay tribute to Kiev. 914 he subjugated them and forced them an increased toll on. A year later he succeeded with the powerful nomadic tribe of Pechenegs to make peace, which initially prevented an attack on Kiev. But already there were 920 new battles with the tribe. 941 Igor appeared with a large fleet before Constantine Opel, previously had existed in the years with the peaceful trade relations. After the Kiev had devastated the area around the city, but they had to admit defeat of the Byzantine army and retire. In response to the attack Byzantium seems to have deleted the trade concessions, the Kiev traders had enjoyed until then. With a new campaign 944 Igor seems to have tried to force recovery of these privileges. The Byzantines sent a delegation to meet him, negotiated the renewed, albeit not quite as favorable trade privileges for Kiev. 945 Igor turned again to the Drevlianians. In a first expedition he sat through an increase in the tribute, as he shortly afterwards was preparing a new campaign, he was slain. The reign of Igor's son Sviatoslav I. underage took over his mother and Igor's wife Olga.
