Igraine

Igraine or Ygraine was the mother of King Arthur. First mentioned by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia Regum Britanniae, he describes it as the daughter of Amlawdd Wledig, a member of the Royal House of Dumnonia. She married her first husband Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall, and after his death his second wife the former allies Uther Pendragon, King of the United Kingdom. She was the mother of five children from her two marriages, many of which are in the Arthurian legends play an important role.

Your children from Gorlois were:

  • Gormant, a son,
  • Elaine, a daughter,
  • Anna- Morgause, a daughter, better known depending on the source as Igraine's sister Morgause as - is considered and
  • Morgaine, a daughter, Morgaine better known as le Fay.

Their only child from his marriage to Uther Pendragon was:

  • King Arthur.

It will also, perhaps mistakenly mentioned as the mother of Cado, King of Dumnonia, by her cousin Geraint, King of Dumnonia. Another tradition they also mentioned as mother of the Duke of Artois, Grimald. Cado is usually seen as a cousin rather than a brother by Igraine other children.
