Iivo Nei

Iivo Nei (born 31 October 1931 in Tartu) is an Estonian chess master.

Life

Nei 1947 in Leningrad was sixth in the USSR Youth Championship, later vice-world champion Viktor Korchnoi won the tournament. Nei 1948 shared with Korchnoi won first place at the subsequent USSR Youth Championship. Eight times Nei won the Estonian Championship (1951, 1952, 1956, 1960-1962, 1971, and 1974). In 1955 he was split 3 - 6th at the Baltic championship in Pärnu that won Paul Keres. In 1960, he decided this championship ( in Palanga ) for themselves. In 1962 he won in Tartu, 1963 and 1964 he again won the Baltic Cup. In 1964, he shared with Keres first place in the blast furnace tournament in Beverwijk. In the Baltic championship in 1965 he finished second behind Vlada Mikenas.

FIDE awarded the title of International Master Nei 1964. In addition to Nikolai Krogius and Efim Geller, he was 1972 's second official world chess champion Boris Spassky of the Match of the Century in Reykjavík.

Neis current Elo rating is 2369 (as of July 2013), however, he has played no Elo -evaluated lot more since June 2011.
