Ikuo Kabashima

Ikuo Kabashima (Japanese蒲 岛 郁 夫, Kabashima Ikuo, born January 28, 1947 in Yamaga, Kumamoto Prefecture) is a Japanese political scientist, politician, and since 2008 non-party governor of Kumamoto.

Life

Kabashima worked after graduating high school in 1965 initially for the local agricultural cooperative. He was described as " agricultural trainee " ( nōgyō kenshūsei ) sent to the U.S. in 1968. In 1974 he completed his studies at the Agronomy Faculty of the University of Nebraska. He then earned a master's degree in Agricultural Economics, 1979, a PhD in political economy at Harvard University.

Then Kabashima taught at the University of Tsukuba, 1977 at the Political Science Institute of the Law Faculty of the University of Tokyo. In between, he has appeared at the Universities of Washington, Princeton and from 2007 at the University of Kumamoto Prefecture.

2008 Kabashima left the University of Tokyo and applied for the successor of Governor Yoshiko Shiotani who decided not to run for a third term. Four other candidates, including the Democratic of the party supported Takayuki Kamakura, and with the support of the farmers' association Nōseiren (农业 者 农 政 运动 组织 连 盟, nōgyōsha Nosei undo Soshiki renmei ) he won the election on 23 March 2008. Unlike its predecessor set he is against the construction of a controversial dam on the Kawabe, which was finally abandoned by the Cabinet Hatoyama 2009. In the gubernatorial election in 2012 Kabashima was re-elected as Allparteienkandidat (without Communists ) for a second term.
