Il Signor Bruschino belongs to a series of five one-act comic opera, Rossini composed 1810-1813 for Venice, which also includes the opera La cambiale di matrimonio and La scala di seta belong. This opera genre was very popular in Venice in the late 18th and early 19th century. Music

The opera was written for a fairly small orchestra consisting of: 1 flute, 2 oboes ( and English horn ), 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, strings and basso continuo for the secco recitatives.

The most famous piece from the opera is the overture, which caused a scandal at its premiere, as the second violins were instructed with their bows to knock on the music stands. This rhythmic sound effect that is heard repeatedly throughout the overture, was at the time perceived as meaningless and unnecessary, so that the musicians were hard to persuade, execute the statement in the score. In addition, the Bruschino is a typical number opera with secco recitatives, although the deep sentimentality and pathos, for example, the cavatina Florvilles or the duet between him and his lover are characterized, forward to the romantic musical language that was later achieved by Bellini and Donizetti, foreshadows.
