The struggle of the Maccabees (AKA: Il vecchio testamento ) is an Italian-French co-production by Gianfranco Parolini from the year 1962.
The film tells the story utterly free from the apocryphal First Book of the Maccabees and Second Maccabees.
Action
About 150 BC: The Syrians have occupied Jerusalem and demand that is worshiped in the temple of Zeus. But the Jewish priest Mattathias calls on the people to resist this demand. A large part of the population comes Mattathias demand for and refuses to start a rebellion and flees into the desert. But the Hebrews are persecuted by their abusers to the desert, so also attacked. The attack calls many dead and those left behind now know that they have to continue their struggle. Judas Maccabaeus, son of Mattathias the priest, the command rule will not, under them, but he falls in battle, and so his brother Jonathan takes over the command. But this one also dies soon and his brother Simon replaces him. After many hardships succeeds the Hebrews finally recapture under Simon Maccabaeus Jerusalem and expel the Syrians.
At the end of the film Simon celebrates the victory with his people. Here it is a Syrian, his bride, to the side. In a speech he proclaimed that the captured Syrian soldiers are to be released, so that they may tell of the power and gentleness of Jerusalem.
Background
The film was produced by the Cinematografica Associati ( CI.AS. ) in cooperation with the Comptoir Français du Film Production ( CFFP ). The hire took over in the U.S., the lender Four Star Television.
Ins German cinema, the film was probably 1964.
In the opening credits of the German version of the film "The struggle of the Maccabees " is just the Italian title "Il Vecchio Testamento " (translated: The Old Testament ) to find. The film was in Germany under the misleading name " Goliath - The struggle of the Maccabees " common, although in the film no role named "Goliath" exists. On German television, the film was probably the first time on 30 May 1991 to the ARD.
2005, the film was released on DVD in Germany.
2004 Mel Gibson planned the history of Makkabäeraufstandes to film a second time. However, to a implementation of these plans, it did not come so far. So the struggle of the Maccabees is still the only film version of the story.
Inaccuracies compared to the original book
- Antiochus was not governor of Jerusalem, but the Seleucid rulers. So he was not only king of Syria.
- The liberation struggle of the Maccabees extended over many years and in that time Antiochus IV died. Successor to replace him.
- In the film, the story of the Maccabees was decorated with love stories and other personal destinies.
The film shows a large number of other inaccuracies, which can be easily detected by observing the apocryphal First Book of the Maccabees and the Second Book of Maccabees.
Criticism
- The lexicon of the International film briefly ruled: " An Italian series product."
