Il viaggio a Reims ossia L' Albergo del Giglio d' Oro ( The Journey to Reims or the hotel to the golden lily) is a comic opera by Gioachino Rossini (music) and Giuseppe Luigi Balocchi ( libretto ). Rossini composed his last Italian language opera for the coronation of the French king Charles X; it was premiered on 19 June 1825 in Théàtre Italy in Paris. The music used Rossini later for his comic opera Le Comte Ory last.

History

Rossini was since the end of 1824 artistic director of the Théâtre Italien and had an ensemble of soloists, choir and orchestra of the theater increased considerably, which made the performance of this play with unusually many soloists possible. Some of the figures are of Madame de Staël's novel Corinne ou l' Italie ( 1807) inspired, but the plot is a free invention of the librettist. The premiere was attended by the new king as well as the owner of the lodges instead, it was followed by two performances in June and for a gala concert in September, after Rossini moved the piece back, apparently, to reuse the music in another plant. Adapt the work came again in 1848 in Paris and 1854 in Vienna (on the occasion of the wedding of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Elisabeth ( under the title Il viaggio a Vienna ) for performance. Thereafter the work fell into oblivion. Was found in 1951 in parts of Rome rossi American Autographs, in the seventies, was also found in Vienna performance material that Janet L. Johnson re- issued. the work was performed at the Rossini Festival in 1984 in Pesaro under the baton of Claudio Abbado in the staging Luca Ronconi again for one year was later transferred to La Scala in Milan. the work was then known quite quickly and secured a place in the international repertoire. too, to the coronation of Prince Albert II of Monaco, 2007, the opera was performed.

Action

A colorful crowd willed guests from all over the world is on the way to the coronation of Charles X, to be held in Reims the following day. The Company enters into Plombières Madame Cortese Bath Hotel " The Golden Lily" from where the various characters meet, covet, ogle, but above all use every conceivable occasion to a musical virtuoso expression of emotion. In the midst of the preparations for the onward journey comes the breaking news that no more horses to get across Plombières. All are as if struck by shock. Madame Cortese, however, has received from her traveling husband a letter, which reported that on the occasion of the king's return to Paris a great feast to be celebrated what all comforts. A feast is celebrated, in which each of the guests recites a musical taste of his homeland. At the end you lost Charles X as a subject on which the improvisation artist Corinna for Lyra impromptu submits an aria. Praise and glory of France and its new king end the evening.

Music

The Dramma giocoso subtitled, one-act opera consists of nine vocal numbers, which are connected by secco recitatives. Rossini used the abilities of its large ensemble of virtuoso singers fully and wrote the highly virtuosic arias and ensembles on the body. It sounded different types aria from Rossini's comic operas. Culminates in the great consternation Finale (No. 7) Gran pezzo concertato a 14 voci, a final for 14 voices, which begins with a long a cappella introduction. The final piece (No. 9) derives its appeal from the different origins of the characters sing all a short ditty; Haydn's hymn besides a Zip Line, Russian and Spanish songs here God save Francis, the Emperor (as hymn to harmony) and God Save The King ( by Lord Sidney, who unfortunately knows only this one song ) quotes.
