Prehistory

The history of the ILA starts with the International air shipping exhibition, held from July 10 to October 17, 1909 in Frankfurt am Main. Were shown airships, balloons and airplanes; there were 500 exhibitors and over a period of four months, 1.5 million visitors. The airship exhibitors included Zeppelin, Parseval, Franz and Hermann Clouth Ruthenberg.

Following the first ILA joined in April 1910 at the suggestion of the aircraft designer August Euler numerous flying clubs for German air -Bund together. Shortly thereafter, the Association of German aircraft industrialist was founded in Frankfurt am Main. Thus, the direct connection between the ILA and the later Federal Association of the German Air and Space Industry Association ( BDLI) was produced, which still exists today.

Despite increasing participants and visitors at the exhibition space had therefore to be reduced. It was decided for this reason to relocate the event to Berlin so that the ILA 1990 was held for the last time in Hanover.
