Ildebrando Antoniutti

Ildebrando Cardinal Antoniutti ( born August 3, 1898 in Nimis, Udine, Italy Province; † August 1, 1974 in Bologna ) was a Vatican diplomat and later Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Antoniutti studied in Udine and Rome, the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy and received on December 5, 1920, the sacrament of Holy Orders. Subsequently, he taught as a professor of theology at the Seminary of Udine and provided at the same time the role of the personal secretary of the Archbishop of Udine. From 1927 to 1934 he held various responsibilities at the Apostolic Delegation in China. From 1934 to 1936 he worked at the Apostolic Nunciature in Portugal. 1936 Pope Pius XI appointed him. Titular Archbishop of Synnada in Phrygia and apostolic delegate in Albania.

During the Spanish Civil War, the pope sent him as a special envoy to Spain. From 1938 to 1953 Antoniutti was Apostolic Delegate to Canada and Newfoundland, from 1953 Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, and in 1962 awarded the Collar of the Order de Isabel la Católica.

He participated in the years 1962-1965 at the Second Vatican Council and Pope John XXIII. appointed him on 19 March 1962 as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Sebastiano Catacombs all in the College of Cardinals. For some he was considered a moderate - conservative Pope candidate; In 1963, Prefect of the Congregation for Religious Antoniutti, which he headed until 1973. On September 13, 1973 he was appointed cardinal bishop of Velletri.

He died in a car accident near Bologna and was buried in the church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio his birthplace.
